CU-25c-2005P-12 & 13R & 14R(WV) Rim Cud

Description

Documented by Cuds on Coins, this 2005 Philadelphia West Virginia State Quarter exhibits a large multi-position rim cud spanning the 12, 13R, and 14R clock positions — an unusually extensive die break covering roughly three hours of the dial. Multi-position cuds indicate a substantial fracture where a wide arc of the die rim broke away in a single event or through progressive failure, leaving a broad raised featureless area on the struck coin where design detail should appear. West Virginia was the 35th state honored in the 50 State Quarters program, released in 2005, with a reverse depicting the New River Gorge Bridge. The three-position span of this cud makes it one of the larger examples documented in the State Quarter series, where rim breaks are collected and cataloged by position. Philadelphia struck approximately 365 million West Virginia quarters in 2005, but cuds of this magnitude are scarce because severely damaged dies are typically pulled from service quickly once the break is detected by quality control inspectors.
