Description

The fifth documented rim cud for the 2005 Philadelphia West Virginia State Quarter, CU-25c-2005P-05(WV) reflects the enormous production volume that characterized the 50 State Quarters Program, where Philadelphia and Denver together struck hundreds of millions of each design. A rim cud results from catastrophic die failure at the edge, where a fragment breaks free and leaves a raised blank area on subsequently struck coins. West Virginia's quarter reverse showcases the iconic New River Gorge Bridge, the longest steel single-arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere at the time of the coin's release. The bridge spans 3,030 feet across the New River Gorge near Fayetteville, and its depiction captured one of Appalachia's most dramatic engineering achievements. The 50 State Quarters Program generated unprecedented public interest in coin collecting — the U.S. Mint estimated 147 million Americans collected the series. West Virginia was the thirty-fifth state admitted to the Union and received its quarter in the program's seventh year alongside California, Minnesota, Oregon, and Kansas. Five cuds for a single issue demonstrate the die wear inherent in high-volume modern minting.
