Description
The 2004 (S) Jefferson Nickel - Peace Medal is a proof nickel struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Jefferson Nickels Westward Journey 2004-2005 series. The U.S. Mint produced 3.0 million examples, making this ranked 2nd of 6 mint variants by mintage, with less than 1% of production. The obverse features two different obverse portraits: a modified Schlag portrait (2004) and a new forward-facing portrait by Joe Fitzgerald (2005) and the reverse displays four commemorative designs: the Peace Medal (2004), Keelboat (2004), American Bison (2005), and Ocean in View (2005). A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value is approximately $5. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5 grams, 21.2 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #94240.
