Description

The 2004 (P) Texas State Quarter was struck at the Philadelphia Mint as a quarter in the State Quarters 1999-2008 series. The Philadelphia Mint struck 278,800,000 Texas quarters dated 2004. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs representing each of the 50 U.S. states, released in the order the states ratified the Constitution or joined the Union. The reverse features a large lone star superimposed on the state outline, surrounded by a lariat rope border. The lone star represents the Republic of Texas's independent spirit, harking back to when Texas was a sovereign nation before joining the Union in 1845. The 2004 quarters honored, in release order, Michigan, Florida, Texas, Iowa, and Wisconsin. Two 2004-D Wisconsin varieties show an extra leaf on the corn stalk, one high and one low. Estimated market value ranges from $0.25 to $4 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
