Description

The 2002 (W) Proof West Point Dollar is a proof dollar struck at the West Point Mint, part of the Modern Commemorative Dollars (1982-Date) series. The U.S. Mint produced 288,293 examples, making this the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 74% of production. The obverse features designs varying by commemorative issue, authorized by Congress to honor significant American events, people, and institutions and the reverse displays designs varying by commemorative issue. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the West Point Mint, originally a bullion depository that became a full coin production facility, specializing in commemorative and bullion issues. Auction record: $345 PR70 08-12-2003 Heritage Auctions. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #921000.
