Description

The 2000 (S) Proof South Carolina State Quarter is a proof quarter struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the State Quarters 1999-2008 series. The San Francisco Mint struck 4,020,172 proof South Carolina quarters dated 2000. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs representing each of the 50 U.S. states, released in the order the states ratified the Constitution or joined the Union. The reverse features the state's iconic palmetto tree, the Carolina wren (state bird), and yellow jessamine (state flower). The palmetto represents the famous palmetto-log fort on Sullivan's Island that repelled a British naval attack in 1776. The 2000 quarters honored, in release order, Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, and Virginia. The program drove an estimated 147 million Americans to collect quarters. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $0.25 to $26 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #913011.
