Description

The 2000 (S) Proof Sacagawea Dollar is a proof dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Sacagawea & Native American Dollars 2000 to Date series. The U.S. Mint produced 4.0 million examples, making this ranked 3rd of 8 mint variants by mintage, with less than 1% of production. The obverse features Sacagawea carrying her infant son Jean Baptiste Crapeau on her back and the reverse displays rotating designs honoring Native American contributions to the United States. The reverse depicts a soaring bald eagle encircled by 17 stars representing the states in the Union at the time of the Lewis and Clark expedition. This original design by Thomas D. Rogers Sr. was used for all Sacagawea dollars from 2000 through 2008. First year of the Sacagawea Dollar. The "Cheerios Dollar" variety with detailed tail feathers (from coins distributed in Cheerios cereal boxes) is a valuable modern rarity. Glenna Goodacre Presentation Dollars in 22-karat gold finish were given to the designer. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value is approximately $7. Struck in 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese and 2% nickel, weighing 8.1 grams, 26.5 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #99598.
