Description

The 2000 (D) Sacagawea Dollar - Millennium Set was struck at the Denver Mint as a dollar in the Sacagawea & Native American Dollars 2000 to Date series. It comes from the 2000 Millennium Coin and Currency Set, which paired a burnished 2000-D Sacagawea dollar with a 2000 American Silver Eagle and a $1 Federal Reserve note; the Mint issued 75,000 sets. The obverse features Sacagawea carrying her infant son, Jean Baptiste Charbonneau, on her back; the reverse shows Thomas D. Rogers Sr.'s soaring eagle. The reverse depicts a soaring bald eagle encircled by 17 stars representing the states in the Union at the time of the Lewis and Clark expedition. This original design by Thomas D. Rogers Sr. was used for all Sacagawea dollars from 2000 through 2008. First year of the Sacagawea Dollar. The "Cheerios Dollar" variety, with detailed tail feathers, comes from coins distributed in Cheerios cereal boxes. Glenna Goodacre was paid her $5,000 fee in 5,000 specially finished 2000-P dollars. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906. Struck in 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese and 2% nickel, weighing 8.1 grams, 26.5 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #99585.
