Description

The 2000 (D) Sacagawea Dollar - Mule with South Carolina is a dollar produced at the Denver Mint as part of the Sacagawea & Native American Dollars 2000 to Date series. The obverse features Sacagawea carrying her infant son Jean Baptiste Crapeau on her back and the reverse displays rotating designs honoring Native American contributions to the United States. The reverse depicts a soaring bald eagle encircled by 17 stars representing the states in the Union at the time of the Lewis and Clark expedition. This original design by Thomas D. Rogers Sr. was used for all Sacagawea dollars from 2000 through 2008. First year of the Sacagawea Dollar. The "Cheerios Dollar" variety with detailed tail feathers (from coins distributed in Cheerios cereal boxes) is a valuable modern rarity. Glenna Goodacre Presentation Dollars in 22-karat gold finish were given to the designer. Struck at the Denver Mint, established in 1906 from an earlier assay office that processed Colorado gold rush metal. Estimated market value ranges from $30K to $66K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 77% copper, 12% zinc, 1% other over a pure copper core, weighing 8.1 grams, 26.5 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. Cataloged as PCGS #893257.
