Description

The 2000 (P) Sacagawea Dollar - Mule with State Obverse is the best-known mint error of the modern era: a Washington state quarter obverse die paired with a Sacagawea dollar reverse die and struck on a golden dollar planchet at the Philadelphia Mint. The front shows George Washington with QUARTER DOLLAR below; because the quarter die is smaller than the dollar blank, the portrait sits inside a band of extra metal with a second rim around it. The back is the Sacagawea dollar's soaring eagle by Thomas D. Rogers Sr. Frank Wallis of Arkansas found the first in 2000, and these are often described as among the first mule errors the Mint released into circulation, unlike the deliberate mules of the 1800s. Three die pairs have been identified, and nineteen examples were confirmed as of 2019. Estimated market value ranges from $50K to $192K depending on grade and condition. Struck on the Sacagawea dollar's planchet, a pure copper core clad in manganese brass (77% copper, 12% zinc, 7% manganese, 4% nickel), weighing 8.1 grams, 26.5 mm in diameter, with a plain edge.
