1999-S Proof Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
Error
Description
Hub misalignment during die manufacturing left visible doubling on this first cataloged doubled die reverse for the 1999 San Francisco Mint proof Lincoln Memorial Cent. Doubled die reverses on proof coinage are especially valued because the mirror-field proof finish provides maximum contrast for observing displaced design elements that might be difficult to detect on business strikes. As the inaugural DDR for the 1999-S proof cent, this variety anchors the sequence for the date and carries significance as the primary discovery for the proof issue. The Lincoln Memorial reverse, designed by Frank Gasparro and in continuous production from 1959 through 2008, features dense architectural detail in the building facade — columns, steps, the seated Lincoln statue, and surrounding inscriptions — all of which can serve as diagnostic areas for detecting hub doubling. Proof Lincoln Cents from 1999 were included in clad and silver proof sets struck at San Francisco, with controlled striking conditions and limited production making proof doubled dies inherently scarcer than their business strike counterparts.
