Description

In the spiked head catalog for the 1999-P New Jersey State Quarter, SKH-25c-1999P-02(NJ) records a different die pair from the -01 entry, each exhibiting its own spike formation on Washington's portrait. Die deterioration near the high point of Washington's head manifests differently on each working die depending on the pattern of metal fatigue, foreign material contact, or die maintenance that produced the defect. Every State Quarter obverse carries the William Cousins modification of John Flanagan's 1932 Washington portrait, and spiked heads on this design typically appear at or near the crown of the portrait.
