SKH-25c-1999P-02(NJ) Spiked Head

Description

Second in the spiked head catalog for the 1999-P New Jersey State Quarter, SKH-25c-1999P-02(NJ) records a different die pair from the -01 entry, each exhibiting its own spike formation on Washington's portrait. Die deterioration near the high point of Washington's head manifests differently on each working die depending on the pattern of metal fatigue, foreign material contact, or die maintenance that produced the defect. Every State Quarter obverse carries the William Flanagan modification of John Flanagan's 1932 Washington portrait, and spiked heads on this design typically appear at or near the crown where the portrait reaches its highest relief. Philadelphia Mint production generated enormous quantities of 1999 State Quarters to satisfy circulation demand and unprecedented public enthusiasm for the program, requiring a large population of working dies and increasing the likelihood that multiple dies would develop spike-producing defects.
