Description

Documented on the 1999 Philadelphia Mint Georgia State Quarter, this variety was cataloged on September 27, 2018, by Cuds on Coins and represents the continued expansion of spiked head documentation for one of the five inaugural State Quarter designs. Georgia's reverse featured a peach, the state outline, live oak branches framing the design, and the state motto "Wisdom, Justice, Moderation"; the spike, though, is on the obverse, where a die crack runs from the rim into Washington's bust. The 50 State Quarters program launched with public enthusiasm in 1999, and the five states honored that year — Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, and Connecticut — received massive production allocations to meet collector demand. This high-volume production, involving many die pairs operating at high speeds, gave many obverse dies the chance to crack this way. Each of the spiked heads is distinguished by its unique spike characteristics on Washington's portrait — the obverse design that remained constant across all State Quarter issues. The 1999 Georgia Quarter spiked heads offer collectors a record of cracked obverse dies from the most intensely produced quarters in United States history, where public demand drove production volumes to levels previously unseen for the denomination.
