About This Coin
The 1999 George Washington Death Bicentennial Commemorative Five Dollar Gold is a United States cent from the Modern Commemorative Five Dollar Gold (1984-Date) series. The obverse features the same George Washington Bust used in American Women Quarters. Designed by Laura Gardin Fraser for the original Washington Quarter design, but was rejected. See the Forum post below for more details. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Modern commemorative five-dollar gold coins are struck in 90% gold (8.359 grams) and represent the premium tier of each year's commemorative program. Their gold content and limited mintages make them both collectible and intrinsically valuable. Gold commemoratives typically have the lowest mintages in each program. Many issues have appreciated significantly since their original sale.
