Description
CU-5c-1999D-02 is a cud error on the 1999 (D) Jefferson Nickel, catalogued by Cuds on Coins. The cud results from a major die break at the rim, where a piece of the obverse die fractured away and left a raised featureless area at the coin's edge. JNC file numbers for this piece derive from the Thurman and Margolis Cud Book, the standard reference for die-break attribution across U.S. coinage. No cross reference number is currently assigned. The Denver Mint produced Jefferson Nickels in standard copper-nickel composition throughout 1999, and a rim die break of this type represents a late or terminal die state — the die having been retained in service after fracture. The 1999 Jefferson Nickel predates the Westward Journey series by five years and carries the standard Felix Schlag Monticello reverse that had been in continuous use since 1938. Obverse cuds on modern Jefferson Nickels are catalogued primarily through the Cuds on Coins database, and CU-5c-1999D-02 is among the documented examples from the Denver Mint's late-1990s production.
