Description

Documented by Cuds on Coins as the sole cataloged cud for the 1996 Philadelphia Washington quarter, CU-25c-1996P-01 records a major rim die break where a section of the die steel fractured completely and separated from the die face. The resulting struck coins display a raised, featureless mass of metal extending inward from the rim, overwriting whatever design elements occupied that zone — whether a portion of Washington's portrait on the obverse or the eagle on the reverse (the catalog number does not carry an "R" suffix, indicating an obverse break). Only one cud has been documented for this date-mint, which could indicate either that 1996-P quarter dies were relatively resistant to rim fractures or simply that the year's output has not been searched as intensively as other dates. No cross-references to other error catalogs exist. The 1996 Philadelphia quarter had a mintage of approximately 925 million pieces — among the higher outputs for the classic Washington design's final years before the State Quarters program launched in 1999. John Flanagan's familiar Washington portrait, adapted from Jean-Antoine Houdon's 1785 bust, was entering its sixty-fourth year of use on the quarter, and the heraldic eagle reverse remained unchanged from its 1932 debut. Cud collectors value first-reported specimens for a date because they establish whether a particular year-mint yielded any rim breaks at all, and CU-25c-1996P-01 fills that role for the 1996-P quarter.
