Description

First documented pre-cud for the 1996 Philadelphia Jefferson nickel, PC-5c-1996P-01 was cataloged by the Cuds on Coins attribution service on a coin from the Jefferson Nickels Original Design series that ran from 1938 through 2003. Felix Schlag's classic design — featuring Thomas Jefferson's portrait on the obverse and his Monticello estate on the reverse — was the competition-winning entry in 1938 and remained in continuous production for 65 years, making it one of the longest-running designs in United States coinage. Pre-cuds on nickels share the same mechanical origin as those on other denominations: a die crack initiates at the rim, where striking stresses are concentrated, and runs through the design field back to the rim, enclosing a section that is still part of the die, so the design on either side stays level on struck coins. On the nickel's larger, heavier-gauge planchet compared to the cent, striking forces are correspondingly greater, and die cracks may develop with different characteristic patterns. Philadelphia struck approximately 829.33 million nickels in 1996, a substantial production run requiring many die pairs. The pre-cud stage captured by this variety records the die at a notable moment — the crack exists and transfers as a fine raised line on struck coins, and continued use could, though not necessarily, advance the failure through the retained cud and full cud stages. The 01 designation as the first cataloged pre-cud for the 1996-P nickel could indicate either that pre-cuds are genuinely uncommon for this issue or that the cataloging effort remains in early stages. Collectors should examine both rim areas under 10-15x magnification with angled lighting, looking for a hair-thin raised line that leaves the rim, cuts through the edge of Schlag's portrait or Monticello design elements, and returns to the rim.
