Description
Opening the cud catalog for the 1995 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel, CU-5c-1995P-01 documents the first die rim failure recorded for this date. A cud is among the most visually dramatic die errors, formed when a section of the die rim fractures and the broken piece separates completely, leaving a cavity that fills with metal during striking. The resulting raised featureless mass stands in sharp contrast to the surrounding design detail, making cuds immediately identifiable even to beginning collectors. The 1995-P Jefferson Nickel was produced during the mid-1990s, when the denomination continued to play a meaningful role in everyday transactions. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, this first entry establishes the starting point for cud documentation on the 1995-P date. The Jefferson Nickel retained Felix Schlag's original 1938 design throughout this period, and the familiar Monticello reverse provided a consistent canvas against which die errors were cataloged. As the initial documented cud for 1995-P, this variety may eventually be joined by additional entries as collectors continue searching through the substantial production output of mid-1990s Philadelphia nickels.
