Cataloged by Cuds on Coins as PC-25c-1994P-02, this 1994 Philadelphia Washington Quarter preserves a pre-cud — an internal die crack that has not yet progressed to a full retained cud where a piece of the die rim breaks away. Pre-cuds represent dies caught at a critical intermediate stage of failure: metal fatigue within the die has created subsurface fractures that manifest as raised lines on struck coins, but the die has not yet lost material. This makes pre-cuds rarer than full cuds because the die must be identified and pulled from service during the narrow window between initial cracking and catastrophic breakage.
