1994 Radical MAD Die Clash MDC-1C-1994-02

Description

Found by Joe Koelling with photographs courtesy of Billy Crawford, MDC-1c-1994-02 is a radical MAD die clash on the 1994 Philadelphia Lincoln cent that remains unabraded — meaning the Mint did not attempt to polish the clash marks from the die before resuming production. The die clash is offset to the southeast, and the visible clash mark consists of a combination of the rim and the left top of the M in AMERICA from the reverse die. Unabraded MAD clashes are particularly valuable for study because the clash marks retain their full depth and definition, undisturbed by the abrasive polishing that the Mint typically applies to clashed dies. The fact that this die was returned to service without abrading suggests either the clash marks were deemed minor enough to continue or the die was not inspected before coins were struck.
