1989 Variety WWHO-001
Error
Description
The first of two doubled working hub obverses identified for the 1989 Lincoln Memorial cent, WWHO-001 (Wexler variety ID 1989 1¢ WWHO-001) represents hub-level doubling that was imparted to every working die manufactured from this particular master hub. The spread manifests towards center on the date numerals, the bottom front of Lincoln's bust, the top of the hair detail, and slightly on the IN GOD WE TRUST motto. The towards-center spread direction means the secondary hub impression was displaced inward, compressing the doubled design elements toward the coin's center rather than pushing them outward toward the rim. Because this is a working hub variety rather than an individual die variety, die markers will vary across different specimens as each working die produced from the hub developed its own unique pattern of scratches, gouges, and die cracks during service. This characteristic is the hallmark of hub-level doubling: consistent doubling pattern combined with inconsistent die markers from specimen to specimen. The discovery of WWHO-001 and WWHO-002 for 1989 was a pivotal event in Lincoln cent variety research. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
