1989 Doubled Working Hub Reverse WWHR-002

Description

The second doubled working hub reverse identified for the 1989 Lincoln Memorial cent, WWHR-002 (Wexler variety ID 1989 1¢ WWHR-002) represents the other half of the hub-level discovery that triggered the wholesale renumbering of the WDDR catalog for this date. The identification of two distinct doubled working hubs — WWHR-001 and WWHR-002 — meant that varieties previously attributed to individual die-level doubling had to be reanalyzed to determine whether their doubling originated from a hub or from a die, fundamentally restructuring the Wexler catalog and leading to the reassignment of WDDR-018, WDDR-021, WDDR-023, and WDDR-025 to the WDDR-013 through WDDR-016 positions. Like WWHR-001, this hub-level variety produces doubling that appears on all working dies manufactured from the affected hub, so die markers will vary from specimen to specimen while the underlying doubling pattern remains constant. The discovery of two doubled working hubs for a single year and denomination represents a significant finding in Lincoln cent variety research, as it revealed that the 1989 doubled die reverse population was more complex than originally understood.
