Description

The opposite side of a cud coin often carries its own diagnostic evidence, and CU-1C-1986-11 on the 1986 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent may exhibit the subtle strike anomalies that obverse cuds can produce on the reverse. When a die section breaks away and creates a void, the area of the planchet directly opposite the void receives uneven pressure during striking. The intact portions of the broken die still deliver full coining force, but the void area exerts no pressure — this asymmetry can manifest as a slight weakness or mushiness in the reverse design elements directly behind the cud. On Lincoln Memorial cents, a large obverse cud near the rim might produce barely perceptible softness in the corresponding section of the Memorial building or the E PLURIBUS UNUM legend on the reverse. This opposite-side effect is not always present, as it depends on the cud's size, position, and the overall striking pressure, but when visible it provides additional confirmation that the raised blob on the obverse is a genuine die break rather than a post-mint addition or mechanical damage artifact. CU-1C-1986-11 is cataloged under its Cuds on Coins designation as the eleventh documented variety for this date.
