Description
Designated CU-1C-1984-01R in the Cuds on Coins catalog, this reverse cud on the 1984 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent records a die break on the reverse die — as indicated by the R suffix in the catalog number. A cud forms when a fragment of the die rim or adjacent design area breaks away, leaving a void in the die face that fills with metal during striking to produce a raised, featureless blob on the finished coin. Reverse cuds on Lincoln Memorial cents can obscure portions of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA legend, the Memorial building, or the ONE CENT denomination depending on the location and extent of the break. Because die breaks are irreversible — once a chunk of hardened die steel separates, it cannot be reattached — every coin struck after the break carries the cud, making early-stage examples with smaller breaks generally scarcer than late-stage examples where the cud grew through continued use.
