1984 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-005

Description

Widely known as "the 1984 DDO," WDDO-005 is one of the most important modern doubled die varieties in American numismatics. Cross-referenced as CONECA 2-O-II and Cherrypickers' Guide FS-01-1984-102 (038), this Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent exhibits strong spread towards center on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the date, the right side of the bottom bust, and all hair details at the top of Lincoln's head. The doubling is visible to the unaided eye, particularly on Lincoln's ear, where the secondary image creates the famous "doubled ear" that brought widespread public attention in the mid-1980s. Alongside the 1955 and 1972 doubled die cents, the 1984 DDO ranks among the most recognized Lincoln cent varieties, regularly featured in introductory guides and frequently the first doubled die a new collector learns to identify. Reverse die markers include numerous north-to-south scratches in the first four and last two Memorial bays, along with die clash remnants in the fourth bay. Examples continue to surface from circulation finds and unsearched rolls. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams from Philadelphia's production of over 8.15 billion 1984 cents.
