Description

Third in the obverse doubled die census for the 1983-S Kennedy half dollar proof, DDO-003 exhibits medium spread affecting LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and the upper front hair on Gilroy Roberts' portrait of President John F. Kennedy. The medium spread classification — placing the doubling magnitude between light and strong — indicates clearly detectable displacement that produces visible secondary images adjacent to the primary design elements without requiring extreme magnification. VarietyVista assigned identifiers UVC-200 and DMR-005, documenting a particularly informative Stage A: the obverse is at early die state with a strong die scratch visible on the rim directly under the O of DOLLAR on the reverse. This die scratch at Stage A provides a diagnostic that is present from the earliest known specimens and may wear away as the die progresses, making it most useful for identifying early-state examples. Stages B and C remain at mid and late die state respectively (both unconfirmed). The comments confirm this as a proof issue, struck at San Francisco with polished dies and specially prepared planchets. The 1983 proof set mintage of approximately 3.14 million sets establishes the maximum population for this proof-only variety.
