1983 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - IDB-1c-1983-02R Interior Die Break
Error
Description
Documented as IDB-1c-1983-02R in the Cuds on Coins census, this interior die break on the reverse of a 1983 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent preserves evidence of a subsurface fracture that never reached the die's rim. Where a cud forms through fatigue cracking at the junction between the die face and its cylindrical sidewall, an interior break initiates at a point of weakness entirely within the working surface — microscopic voids, sharp design transitions, or residual hubbing stresses. The resulting fracture appears as a raised irregular mass within the design field rather than at the coin's border, distinguishing it from both cuds and die chips. Die chips involve the loss of a tiny surface fragment, while interior die breaks typically affect a larger area and penetrate deeper into the die structure. Interior die breaks are substantially less common than rim-originated cuds in the census. Attribution by Cuds on Coins.
