Description

Fundamentally different from a standard doubled die, this 1982-S Washington Quarter WMDO-001 is a master die doubling — the doubling originated on the master die itself, not on an individual working die. Because all working dies for the 1982 quarter were produced from this master die, every 1982-dated quarter from all three mints (Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco) carries the same doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST and the date. This universal presence makes WMDO-001 unique: it is not a scarce die-specific anomaly but a systematic feature shared across the entire year's production. The spread is visible as Class II doubling on IGWT and the date numerals. Cross-referenced as CONECA MD-1-O-II and formerly Cherrypickers FS-25-1982S-101, the variety was removed from the Cherrypickers Guide 6th Edition — likely because its presence on every 1982 quarter diminishes the cherrypicking value of searching for it. Attributed by the Wexler Team, this proof San Francisco issue was struck in clad composition. The master die mechanism means coin-to-coin variation exists only in strike quality, not in the doubling, since every die carried identical doubled impressions from the shared master.

Apparent differences from coin to coin may result due to working hub wear, working die wear, and wear to the coins.
