Description

Capturing the earlier die state for RIDB-1c-1982-03, this entry documents the retained interior die break on the 1982 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent struck on the 2.5-gram copper-plated zinc planchet with the wider large date numerals. At this stage, the interior obverse die fracture has cracked but the broken piece remains in position, impressing its fractured edges into the zinc planchet during each strike and producing raised lines or ridges that trace the break's geometry without the smooth featureless plateau that will develop once the fragment eventually separates. The absence of the "R" suffix confirms the obverse die location, making this the zinc-composition companion to the bronze cud-stage entry at RIDB-03 — together they document the same die's progressive failure across two compositions and two die states. On the copper-plated zinc planchet, the thin copper shell over the zinc core must conform to the subtle raised irregularities created by the retained fragment, and the plating's behavior over these fine features can produce diagnostic textures visible under magnification. The retained interior die break classification distinguishes this variety from conventional die cracks by the enclosed, island-like geometry of the fractured section within the die face.
