Description
Following immediately on the heels of CU-60, census entry CU-1C-1982-61 documents an interior cud on the same Bronze Large Date subtype. The contrast between these sequential entries — one a rim cud, the next a standard interior cud — underscores the unpredictable nature of die failure geometry. Two dies manufactured from the same batch of tool steel, heat-treated to the same hardness specification, and installed in presses operating at comparable tonnage can nonetheless fail in entirely different ways, because the location of the initiating crack is governed by microscopic variables that no quality control process can fully predict. The interior cud recorded here extends beyond the coin's peripheral margin into the design field, displacing a portion of the obverse or reverse imagery with a raised, featureless plateau of metal. At 3.1 grams and 95% copper, this Bronze Large Date cent represents the alloy composition that had defined American small cents for twenty years before the mid-1982 transition to copper-plated zinc ended that era.
