Description
With CU-1C-1982-58, the Bronze Large Date cud tally continues to grow at a pace consistent with its expected position as the most die-intensive of the four 1982 Philadelphia subtypes. Die scheduling at a major mint facility like Philadelphia involves a constant rotation: fresh dies are installed, run until they show unacceptable wear or develop structural failures, and then replaced from a ready inventory maintained by the die shop. The bronze alloy used for this cent — 95% copper with 5% zinc, weighing 3.1 grams — had been the Lincoln cent standard since 1962, giving die makers two decades of experience with its striking characteristics. Yet familiarity with the alloy did not prevent rim failures, which are fundamentally a function of die metallurgy and press mechanics rather than planchet composition. Attribution by Cuds on Coins.
