Description

Pressing deeper into the upper fifties of the subtype-specific catalog, CU-1c-1982-56(LD) on the Bronze Large Date at 3.1 grams adds another documented die failure to a census region where the pace of new discoveries has necessarily slowed as the most conspicuous fracture positions were cataloged in earlier entries. Die breaks reaching census number fifty-six tend to occupy subtler positions on the die face — smaller fragments, less prominent angular locations, or fractures whose geometries closely approach those of existing entries and require especially careful differentiation during the verification process. The bronze planchet's 95% copper-zinc alloy fills the interior cud region with solid homogeneous metal, producing a raised plateau whose surface characteristics under magnification reveal the grain structure of the pre-transition alloy compressed at full coining pressure into the voided die section. Four decades of atmospheric exposure have built a brown patina layer across the cud surface that integrates it visually with the surrounding design elements, and the 3.1-gram weight anchors this specimen firmly in the pre-transition production window. Without independent cross-references, the Cuds on Coins census designation remains the sole published attribution pathway for this die break. Attribution by Cuds on Coins.
