Description
Forty-second in the overall 1982 Philadelphia cud census, CU-1C-1982-42 appears on the Bronze Large Date subtype — the configuration that almost certainly saw the heaviest die utilization of any 1982-P variety. As the default production setup carried over from 1981, the Bronze Large Date required no new tooling or planchet changes, and Philadelphia's presses struck this combination from January through the point at which either the Small Date hub or the zinc planchets entered the production flow. The raised mass of displaced metal that defines this cud — featureless where the fractured die segment could no longer impart design detail — is the permanent imprint of a die's final failure, preserved on a 3.1-gram bronze planchet.
