Description
Sixty-second in the 1982 Denver Mint cud census, CU-1C-1982D-62 is notably assigned to the Zinc Small Date subtype — distinguishing it from the majority of 1982-D cuds that appear on the Large Date variety. The Small Date designation refers to the date style of the new 1982 obverse hub, with slightly smaller, more closely spaced numerals, and its association with the zinc composition confirms production after the mid-1982 changeover from copper to copper-plated zinc. The distinction between Large Date and Small Date cuds is numismatically significant because the two date styles came from different hubs and so were used on different working dies, meaning that a cud on a Small Date die and one on a Large Date die are inherently from different dies regardless of their rim break positions. Reaching census number 62 for the combined 1982-D cud inventory is exceptional by any standard, underscoring the thoroughness with which error coin searchers have examined this pivotal date. The coin was struck at the Denver Mint from copper-plated zinc planchets weighing 2.5 grams. Attribution by Cuds on Coins.
