Description

Die number eighteen in the 1980 Philadelphia cud census, CU-1C-1980-18 records another instance of terminal rim fracture from a year that has proven exceptionally fertile ground for cud collectors. The mechanism behind cud formation — catastrophic separation of a die rim segment — produces an error that is both permanent and consistent: once the fragment detaches, every subsequent strike from that die produces an essentially identical raised blob on the coin's surface. This consistency distinguishes cuds from progressive die cracks or die chips, where the error's appearance evolves as the crack widens or additional material flakes away with continued use. For CU-1C-1980-18, the fixed nature of the break means that all examples from this die will share the same featureless raised area at the same position, making authentication relatively straightforward compared to varieties that require die state analysis. The coin was struck from 95% copper alloy at Philadelphia and bears the P mintmark introduced on the cent in 1980. Attribution by Cuds on Coins.
