Description

Fourteenth in the growing inventory of 1980 Philadelphia cent cuds, CU-1C-1980-14 continues to expand a census that has become one of the most extensive for any modern Lincoln Memorial date. When a die fractures at the rim, the detached fragment typically remains wedged against the collar or falls free during subsequent strikes, and every planchet struck after the break inherits the same raised blob in the affected zone. Because the fragment's absence is permanent, all coins struck from that die after the fracture event carry the cud — making die state progression less relevant than for varieties that evolve gradually over a die's working life. The identification of CU-1C-1980-14 as a distinct entry required careful comparison against all thirteen previously cataloged breaks to confirm that its angular position, arc length, and distance from design elements constituted a genuinely new die rather than a previously known variety examined in different lighting or preservation. The 1980 Philadelphia cent was the inaugural year for the P mintmark on the denomination, struck from the traditional 95% copper alloy. Attribution by Cuds on Coins.
