Description

Seventh in the documented sequence of rim failures for the 1980 Philadelphia cent, CU-1C-1980-07 adds to what has become one of the more substantial cud censuses in the Lincoln Memorial cent series for a Philadelphia date. The accumulation of seven or more confirmed cuds for a single year and mint demonstrates that die failure was a routine consequence of high-volume production rather than an exceptional event — a perspective that helps contextualize cud collecting within the broader framework of die variety research. Every working die had a finite service life determined by the interplay of die steel hardness, striking pressure, planchet hardness, and production speed. When any of these variables shifted — harder planchets, higher press speeds, or slightly softer die steel from a particular batch — the rate of die failures could increase noticeably. CU-1C-1980-07 documents one such failure event, preserved in copper when the broken die continued to operate after the rim segment separated.
