Description
Cataloged by CudsOnCoins as CU-100c-1979D-08, this Denver-mint Susan B. Anthony Dollar exhibits a rim cud: part of the die's rim gutter was lost, leaving a raised interruption in the design rim, following its curve, on every coin struck until the die is retired. The Susan B. Anthony Dollar, introduced in 1979, was designed by Frank Gasparro and became the first circulating United States coin to honor a non-mythological woman. Its obverse features Anthony's portrait surrounded by thirteen stars, while the reverse carries a reduced version of the Apollo 11 mission insignia originally used on the Eisenhower Dollar. The 1979 Denver mintage was substantial as the Mint launched the new denomination amid public anticipation, though the coin was soon criticized for its similarity in size to the quarter. Cuds are classified by their position relative to design elements and the die rim, and CU-100c-1979D-08 represents the eighth documented cud variety for the 1979-D Susan B. Anthony Dollar, indicating meaningful die variety research on this often-overlooked denomination.
