Description

Designated PC-1c-1978-01 by Cuds on Coins with a catalog date of 08/22/2022, this variety documents a pre-cud on the 1978 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent — the precursor stage to a full cud break. A pre-cud represents a critical intermediate phase in the die failure progression: the fatigue crack has propagated through the die rim to a degree that produces a visible raised line or ridge on struck coins, but the affected die fragment has not yet separated completely from the die body. On the coin itself, a pre-cud appears as a raised, linear feature running along or near the rim — distinct from the amorphous, featureless blob that characterizes a fully developed cud. This transitional state is inherently short-lived in production terms because continued striking will inevitably complete the fracture, causing the rim fragment to detach and converting the pre-cud into a full cud on all subsequent strikes. Consequently, pre-cuds tend to be scarcer than their corresponding full cuds, as the window during which the die produces pre-cud impressions may encompass only a fraction of the total strikes made after the crack reaches visibility but before final separation occurs. PC-1c-1978-01 is the sole documented pre-cud for the 1978 Philadelphia cent and carries no additional cross-references from other attribution services. All 1978 Philadelphia cents were struck without a mint mark from the standard 95% copper alloy composition. Attribution by Cuds on Coins.
