Description
The 1976 (S) Proof Silver Kennedy Half Dollar is a proof half dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Bicentennial Coins 1976 series. The U.S. Mint produced 4 million examples, making this the lowest mintage among 5 mint variants, representing only less than 1% of total production. The obverse features the standard obverse for each denomination with dual dates 1776-1976 and the reverse displays special reverse designs: Colonial drummer boy (quarter), Independence Hall (half dollar), Liberty Bell and Moon (dollar). Struck after the transition from silver to clad coinage, as the Mint adapted to modern production methods and record-breaking mintages. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value is approximately $24. Struck in outer layers - 80% silver, 20% copper; center - 79% copper, 21% silver, weighing 11.5 grams, 31 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #6812.
