Description

This 1976-S Bicentennial half dollar DDR-001, cataloged by VarietyVista and cross-referenced as FS-801, is one of the most significant doubled die varieties in the Kennedy half dollar series. The variety exhibits a medium spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and the designer's initials, with lighter spread on HALF DOLLAR, AMERICA, UNITED, and the lower stars, plus extra thickness on the 200 YEARS OF FREEDOM inscription. Tracked under Universal Variety Code UVC-451 and Die Marker Reference DMR-007, this variety shows the reverse and obverse in early die state at Stage A, with Stage B and Stage C at mid and late die states respectively, both unconfirmed. The 1976-S Bicentennial half dollar features the special Independence Hall reverse designed by Seth Huntington, replacing the standard heraldic eagle for the nation's 200th anniversary. This CN (copper-nickel) clad proof variety can be found in 1975 proof sets, as the Mint began producing 1976-dated proof coins in 1975 for inclusion in these collector sets. The coin weighs 11.34 grams with a 30.6 mm diameter. The FS-801 designation from the Fivaz-Stanton reference underscores this variety's importance and collectibility. The Bicentennial Coins 1976 series represents a unique chapter in American coinage, and the DDR-001 variety on the half dollar is among the most sought-after Bicentennial varieties for its combination of strong doubling and the historically significant reverse design.
