Description

A strong Class I CW spread shows on the letters of LIBERTY, IGWT, the front of the bust, and the date. Die Markers: Obverse Stage A: A die scratch extends NW from the upper left second T of TRUST to the rim. A small die gouge can be found touching the top left side of the horizontal crossbar of the first T of TRUST. Obverse Stage B: The doubling has a much “mushier” appearance. All Stage A markers are gone except for a small remnant of the die gouge at the top of the first T of TRUST. Reverse Stage A: A small die gouge can be found just to the right of the bottom of the last Memorial column. A die scratch extends SE from the rim above the E of UNITED. Reverse Stage B: The Stage A markers are no longer visible. A small die gouge (dot) can be found inside the bottom of the E of CENT.

  • CONECA: 8-O-I, Cherrypickers: FS 01-1972-108 (033.58), Crawford: CDDO-008, Coppercoins: 1972P-1DO-008 Comments: Like WDDO-002, this is a very nice Class I doubled die variety and if Die #1 (WDDO-001) did not exist, this would most likely be considered to be a major variety in its own right. This variety, because of the strong spread of the doubling, has caught on with collectors over the past several years and prices for nice Brilliant Uncirculated specimens have continued to rise significantly.
