Description

The 1971 (S) Proof Silver Eisenhower Dollar - Mel Wacks MW-18 Counterstamp is a 40% silver proof Eisenhower dollar from San Francisco that was privately counterstamped in 1984 for the Los Angeles Olympic Games. It is number 18 in Mel Wacks's series of counterstamps, the "Olympic Runners": Wacks designed it, and it shows ancient runners with the inscription LOS ANGELES GAMES, SUMMER 1984. It was one of a trio of 1984 Olympic counterstamps, each with a maximum issue of 2,000: the Runners and the Weightlifter (MW-19) on proof 1971 silver Eisenhower dollars, and an Olympic torch on Bicentennial Kennedy half dollars. It is a private piece, not a U.S. Mint issue, and not one of the Mint's 1983-1984 Olympic commemorative dollars. The host coin is one of 4,265,234 proof 40% silver dollars the San Francisco Mint struck in 1971. PCGS catalogs it as #861680.
