Description

The 1971 (S) Eisenhower Dollar - Prototype Strike DMR-039/ODV-011/RDV-007 is a special strike dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Eisenhower Dollars 1971-1978 series. With a mintage of only 3, this is an extremely rare issue. The obverse features Dwight D. Eisenhower facing left, while the reverse displays an eagle landing on the moon with an olive branch in its talons, commemorating the Apollo 11 lunar landing. Designed by Frank Gasparro/Michael Collins & James Cooper. Struck in 40% silver, 60% copper, weighing 24.59 grams, 38.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #519088. The Eisenhower Dollar honored both President Eisenhower and the Apollo 11 moon landing, combining the two themes on a single coin. The 40% silver blue-pack and brown-pack variants are collected avidly. The 1972 Type 2 (high-relief moon) and various die varieties add interest to this short series.
