Description
The 1971 (S) Eisenhower Dollar - Prototype Strike DMR-039/ODV-011/RDV-007 is a special strike dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Eisenhower Dollars 1971-1978 series. As a prototype/transitional variety, surviving examples are extremely rare. The obverse features Dwight D. Eisenhower facing left and the reverse displays an eagle landing on the moon with an olive branch in its talons, commemorating the Apollo 11 lunar landing. Struck after the transition from silver to clad coinage, as the Mint adapted to modern production methods and record-breaking mintages. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Auction record: $102,000 SP67 01-15-2023 Heritage Auctions.
