Description
The 1971 (S) Eisenhower Dollar - Prototype Strike DDO-023/ODV-010/RDV-007 is a special strike dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Eisenhower Dollars 1971-1978 series. As a doubled die variety, the number of surviving examples is unknown. Doubled dies are produced when the die receives a second, misaligned impression during the hubbing process, creating a distinctive doubling effect visible on struck coins. The obverse features Dwight D. Eisenhower facing left and the reverse displays an eagle landing on the moon with an olive branch in its talons, commemorating the Apollo 11 lunar landing. Struck after the transition from silver to clad coinage, as the Mint adapted to modern production methods and record-breaking mintages. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $100K to $264K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 40% silver, 60% copper, weighing 24.59 grams, 38.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #509322.
