Description

Strong spread on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and LIBERTY, with the dramatic detail of four serifs visible on the lower I of IN, marks DDO-006 as one of the more visually striking doubled die obverses on the 1971 Denver Mint Kennedy Half Dollar. Cross-referenced as FS-102, this Fivaz-Stanton listing confirms DDO-006's recognition as a significant variety within major attribution references. Die markers under UVC-175 and DMR-008 track three stages: Stage A with both obverse and reverse at Early-to-Mid Die State, Stage B at Mid Die State, and Stage C at Late Die State. The obverse is additionally designated ODV-003, and the variety can be found in 1971 Mint Sets, providing a specific acquisition avenue for collectors. Denver struck 302,097,424 Kennedy Half Dollars in 1971, the first year of the copper-nickel clad composition that replaced the 40% silver content used from 1965 through 1970. Four serifs on the lower I of IN is exceptional — standard hub impression produces one or two serifs, and the doubling has created the appearance of additional serifs through overlapping impressions. Cataloged by VarietyVista, DDO-006 benefits from strong spread across three major legend elements simultaneously, making it identifiable at moderate magnification and confirming its FS-102 status as a widely recognized variety in the Kennedy Half Dollar series.
