Description
Cataloged in 2022 — six years after the first three 1971-D Kennedy Half Dollar pre-cuds were documented in 2016 — this fourth entry demonstrates the ongoing nature of die variety discovery. PC-50c-1971D-04 records yet another developing die rim crack on a 1971 Denver Mint half dollar, showing a fracture that might later progress to a full cud, though many such dies were retired with the crack intact. A pre-cud captures the crack where the die rim has failed structurally but the fragment remains in place. The six-year gap between the initial trio and this fourth discovery illustrates how new specimens continue to surface as collectors examine previously unstudied coins. Four pre-cuds from one date and mint is an unusually high concentration, reflecting both the volume of 1971-D halves produced and the intensity of examination they have received. The 1971-D was the first copper-nickel clad Kennedy Half Dollar, replacing the 40% silver composition used from 1965 through 1970. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, this fourth pre-cud expands the documented record of die rim failures for this historically significant transitional date.
