Description

Seven documented cuds for the 1970 Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel — with this being the seventh — establishes 1970-D as one of the more prolific cud-producing dates in the nickel series. The high count correlates with Denver's substantial production volume during a period when coin demand was rebounding after the shortages and composition changes of the mid-1960s. CU-5c-1970D-07 records a major die break at the rim where a fragment of the die separated, creating the cavity that fills with metal during striking to form the characteristic raised featureless mass of a cud error. Each of the seven documented cuds for this date represents a distinct die that failed during its service life, and collectively they paint a picture of die attrition patterns at the Denver facility during 1970 production.
