1967 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-016
Error
Description
Produced during the transitional period when the U.S. Mint eliminated mintmarks and dates from 1965 through 1967 to discourage hoarding of silver coins, this Kennedy Half Dollar DDR-016 exhibits a medium quadruple spread on the stars under and lower letters of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with light triple spread visible on the stars positioned between the heraldic eagle's rays. The silver-clad composition — 40% silver outer layers bonded to a copper-nickel core — was itself new for the half dollar denomination, introduced only two years earlier when the Coinage Act of 1965 reduced silver content from the original 90% of 1964. Die markers tracked under UVC-483 and DMR-033 reveal three documented stages: Stage A shows numerous die scratches on the reverse and north-south scratches on the obverse, both in Early Die State; Stage B transitions to Mid-Die State (unconfirmed); and Stage C reaches Late Die State (also unconfirmed). Cataloged by VarietyVista, the quadruple spread — four distinct impressions rather than the typical two — indicates multiple hub-to-die alignment errors during the die production process.
