1967 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-013
Error
Description
Thirteenth in the reverse doubled die census for the 1967 Kennedy half dollar, DDR-013 presents medium spread on the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the stars positioned beneath those letters on the reverse designed by Frank Gasparro. VarietyVista assigned die identifiers UVC-424 and DMR-028, and documented three die stages with an unusual progression: Stage A at mid die state (unconfirmed), Stage B where both reverse and obverse surfaces show confirmed mid die state characteristics, and Stage C where both surfaces have reached confirmed late die state. The absence of a documented early die state suggests either that no EDS specimens have been examined or that the die entered production already showing some wear from the die preparation process. The Stage B and Stage C confirmations provide collectors with verified reference points at two different stages of die deterioration. The 1967 Kennedy half dollar was struck without a mintmark during the Congressional mintmark suspension (1965-1967), in 40% silver-clad composition — a transitional era when the denomination served as the last circulating United States coin to contain any silver content. The comments notation "BS" confirms this as a business strike rather than a Special Mint Set specimen, which is an important distinction for 1967 coinage since SMS coins were struck from specially prepared dies with enhanced finishes. Medium spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the accompanying stars indicates a hub doubling event of moderate intensity affecting the upper reverse periphery, where the inscription arcs above the heraldic eagle. Collectors should examine the letter strokes and adjacent star points under 10-15x magnification, where medium spread produces visible secondary impressions displaced from the primary that are confirmable without extreme magnification.
